Marj began melting glass in 1993 before the Flame working
movement in this country burst! Using an ancient Egyptian technique
known as lampwork Marj makes one of a kind Glass Cabinet Knobs,
glass beads, and jewelry. Marj also makes glass bottle stoppers,
fan/light pulls and more.
As a veteran Glass Maker Marj has taught hundreds of students
over the years, some glass artists today.
In 1996 Marj decided to make glass cabinet knobs. One detail though was there was no hardware available to do so. Never one to shy away from a challenge Marj, with the help of a Machine Shop in the west, was able to design and have fabricated the parts she needed . Since then Marj has been selling Glass Knobs around the world. “Custom orders are my favorite, I love the challenge!” says Marj.
Marj also sells MAKE A KNOB™ kits to other glass artists.
Last year Marj adopted the cutest puppy in the world and since then has been melting glass in the likeness of Simon and other folks pets too! Marj also adds cremains to glass sculpture because this is what pet owners asked for.
Marj also dabbles in Fiber Art making wicked cool scarves, vests and
other wearables.
To visit Marj’s light filled studio by the sea follow the road to the historic Scituate Lighthouse in Scituate Harbor and you will get to Marj Bates Studio.
